Baja SAE Brake Rotor Analysis

Used thermal and structural simulation to evaluate brake rotor materials, temperature response, and geometry for a student race vehicle.

YEAR

STATUS
Complete

Objective

Assess brake rotor material and geometry choices for a Baja SAE vehicle under braking loads and elevated temperature conditions.

Method

Built the rotor geometry in Siemens NX and evaluated thermal and structural behavior using ANSYS Mechanical. The study compared candidate materials, investigated temperature reduction targets, and established a repeatable workflow for future design updates.

Key Learning

The project strengthened practical understanding of boundary-condition selection, material-property sensitivity, mesh refinement, and the importance of validating simulation assumptions against real vehicle operating conditions.
